Te Kōtuku Cultural Festival (Saturday 21st of November)

The first couple of weeks of this term have been an incredible opportunity for our rōpū. The pōwhiri was a different experience as the rōpū were alone, to adhere to the gathering number requirements, but it was another opportunity to represent the kura. We welcomed to the kura all of our new to Stonefields whānau. The opening of the new buildings was special as well. Those who could get up early did a fantastic job. It's a real privilege to be part of these occassions. It's great to be given these very special opportunities for our rōpū to represent our kura and community.

Our next scheduled event is the Te Kōtuku Cultural Festival. The Te Kōtuku Cultural Festival is on Saturday, the 21st of November at Ruapōtaka Marae, in Glen Innes. The Te Kōtuku Cultural Festival is a local primary school kapa haka performance showcase. We are 1 of 14 local schools who have been invited to perform. It's a great experience for our rōpū. We get to perform but we also get the chance to see other rōpū from around the area perform. This is a wonderful opportunity to extend and enhance our kapa haka experiences and learning. We are very fortunate to have these opportunities. Let's make sure we take full advantage of it.

The event is on a Saturday and would compete with Saturday sport or other weekend commitments. We are performing at 10:45am so need to be at the Community Hall by 10am. We want to have as many learners there as possible to enjoy the festival so if you can try and negotiate with the summer sport commitments when we know the timing that would be awesome. Last time we had learners come in their cricket gear for a quick transition. Your support to help us give as many of our learners an opportunity to experience this is really important. It can work.

Here are some of the rules and regulations for the festival:

  • Ruapotaka Marae will not be liable for any lost or missing property.
  • Only authorised personnel will be given access to community hall, warm up room etc.
  • There will no be changing rooms available on arrival, please arrive in kapahaka uniform.
  • All bags and gear to be left in your vehicles.
  • Students are to have a change of clothes for after the performance.
  • Drop points for students will be in front of the community hall.
  • There is strictly no eating on marae atea, front of stage.
  • All performing students will be given a lunch pack, this will be one per person.
  • This is a smoke free and alcohol free event.

To help support our learning from home, below is the waiata set we are using for the festival:

Te Iwi E

Tiaho Mai Ra

Toia (Mai te waka nei)

Tika Tonu (haka)

Hoki Mai

He Waiata Matariki

Purea Nei

Your support to ensure that our learners are practicing and embedding the waiata is really helpful when we get together. Please connect with me or any of the supporting teachers if there are any queries or requests.
