Kapa Haka Vision & Goals

Purpose
This communication is to share the vision and goals for the Kapa Haka group with our community so we can share what we are trying to achieve.  It is vitally important to the community that we are all engaged and coordinated to work towards these common goals.

Background
A considerable amount of work has been invested in communication this year.  The team has done a great job developing material and tools for the use of the learners.  We have started a blog that we use to communicate and provide the tools for the learners to succeed.  What we have learnt is that this is only engaging with a fraction of our community.

This feedback has been invaluable, so our approach is to continue to invest in the blog but also use other avenues to communicate, one being email but others include the weekly school communication update and Kapa Haka practices.  We encourage you to view the blog and get your children confident with the tools on the site i.e. songs and actions.  You will have the ability to subscribe (follow by email) to the site to get notifications of any new content.  This will help you remain connected.

Understanding that there has been a disconnect has made us review how we connect with the community.  For this reason we want to start from the beginning and link what we are doing in practices to the aspirations of the group.

Vision
Our overall vision for Kapa Haka is to create a whanau kotahi (one family) environment, we want to nurture our future leaders and their family members by making them feel comfortable and supported as well as building confidence in themselves and in Te Ao Maori (the Maori world) through Waiata (songs) and dance.

Our Goals
  1. To give our Kapa Haka students an opportunity to experience Maori culture not only through song and dance but by introducing them to other aspects of Maori such as tikanga (customs and traditions), Te reo (language) and history to gain a better understanding of Maori culture and the land we live in.  To achieve this goal we will be taking Kapa Haka to different Marae at least once a year where they will be able to learn these aspects of our culture.
  2. To get our Kapa Haka students to competition level in four+ years.  To achieve this goal we want to:
    • Create an annual event to provide Kapa Haka with another opportunity to perform in front of an audience with the intentions of building their confidence on stage, improving their skills and working together towards a set goal.  This will begin to prepare our students for  competitions in the future.
    • Attend the Auckland Polynesian festival and similar events where our students can experience Kapa Haka performances by school children at competition level so that they get a better understanding of what is expected and what the standards are.

Next Steps
In our next communications we will be sharing:
    • Our projected schedule for the remainder of the year, AND
    • Expectations leading into events (schedule milestones)

Summary
Your support will assist in the successful delivery of cultural experience for your children and your family.  Your assistance in helping us achieve this is imperative.  If you have any questions or require clarification can you please contact Bryan Fox 021 804448.
